5 days intensive rock climbing course for beginners
Rock climbing is exhilarating sport that demands strength, endurance, agility and good mental control. It also requires a wide range of skills in order to be safe in the vertical world.
Historically, rock climbing was an important component of Alpine mountaineering. Since then, it has evolved into a separate sport in it’s own right, which is technically varied and increasingly athletic.
Chamonix and the surrounding area offer amazing rock climbing in beautiful natural settings. We have fantastic multi-pitch routes for climbers of all levels.
We designed this course for those who have little or no previous rock climbing experience but are passionate about outdoor activities, or have climbed indoors and want to progress to outdoor rock climbing.
Throughout this course, you will learn everything you need to know to be confident climbing bolted single and multi pitch routes with more experienced friends.
We will teach you the basic rock climbing techniques, how to read the rock, spot the easiest passages available and how to position your body to maximize use of the hand and foot holds.
You will learn the most important knots, how to belay your partner, rappel, how to safely set the anchor, correctly clip rope into karabiners, etc.
As the course progresses and you become more confident, you will, if you choose to and under supervision of your guide, lead a route in easy terrain where you can practice the skills you have learned in previous days.
In the event of bad weather, we have option to go to Italy where the weather is usually different. In the very rare event of bad weather everywhere (France, Italy and Switzerland) we will teach you the essential rope work and safety skills in the local indoor gym.

Itinerary
We will use variety of locations for the training and climbing. The itinerary will be adapted to the overall level of the group and weather / conditions.
Arrival Day: Welcome Meeting
You should arrive in Chamonix the day before the first full day of your course. The course starts with an evening meeting between the course participants and the guide at our office. Your guide will go through the plan for the week and answer any questions you have.
Day 1
Today we start in one of the local single pitch crags. You will get to know the rock climbing equipment and learn how to use it. We will go through hazard evaluation and risk management of single pitch climbing. You will learn the basic moves on rock, practice ‘top rope’ safety skills and learn climbing communication calls. After the climbing practice, we will have an evening seminar in our offices where we will teach you the most important climbing knots.
Day 2
The morning will be used to reinforce the skills you learned the day before. Repetition is the key to good practice. You will further your rock climbing skills and try to climb harder routes. In the afternoon, we will introduce abseil techniques; lead belaying and multi-pitch rope skills. Another evening seminar today, this time about ropes and fall dangers.
Day 3
Today we will go to one of the local multi pitch areas to try out a real multi pitch route! The area will be chosen depending on your climbing level, but it will be a very easy climb which will allow you to practice your rope skills without worrying about falling.
Days 4 & 5
These 2 days are dedicated to climbing! You will again and again use the skills you have learned the first 3 days – repetition is good way to get all the safety skills under your skin. We will explain how to read guidebooks and prepare your own climbing pack. Under the supervision of your guide, you will lead pitches and belay your partner. Finally, we will introduce you to self-rescue techniques – important skills to know when you unexpectedly need to get yourself out of the climb.
